We’ve got a busy day today with the President of the Republic of El Salvador arriving in an hour or so, but I was just in the Oval Office with President Trump and he lost his mind during coverage of the Blue Origin flight. I’m back in my office for a minute while he calms down and they clean up.
Very quickly, for those who don’t know, Blue Origin is the the space company owned by Jeff Bezos. This morning’s successful, historic flight was manned by an all-female crew, including owner Jeff Bezos’ fiance, Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, Katy Perry, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Karianne Flynn. It was the first all-female space flight since 1963.
As you might expect, an all-female space flight is an elegant finger in the masculine eye of the President.
We watched the coverage together and I took a few notes on his reaction:
He asked if it was possible to “shoot the rocket down and blame Canada.” He made a phone call to Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said he’d “get on it.”
He said it should be called Blue Orgy, not Blue Origin.
He made fun of the outfits they were wearing, then immediately said he’d look better than all six of the women if he wore one. He made a note on his desk pad which read “GET BLUE SPACE SUIT!”
Secretary Hegseth called back and said he looked into it, but there wasn’t enough time to direct our surface-to-air missiles to the area. Trump told him “you suck” and hung up.
He vowed to create an “All-Male Space Team,” which would include members wearing tight suits with “big bulges in all the right places.”
As we watched the capsule safely touch down at the designated landing site in the Texas desert, he slammed his hand down on the Resolute Desk, spilling his Diet Coke all over the new MadLibs for Dictators book he had planned to work on this afternoon.
He then threw the spilled Diet Coke can at the copy of the Declaration of Independence to his right, then told everyone to leave.
